Springsteen - Fenway Park - 8/15/2012

We took our first vacation, REAL vacation, in a long long time a couple of weeks ago. We went to Cape Cod, South Yarmouth to be exact. We had an incredible time. In the middle of the week, we took a trip up to Boston. We met my friend Kristine C. for lunch on Wednesday and then went to a Springsteen show Wednesday night. On Thursday, we met my good friend, Tim W. and his daughter for lunch. So good to see him.

The Springsteen show was INCREDIBLE. The show had a 1970's feel to it. He played songs from that era. He played them like he played them in the 70s. It was awesome. It started to rain at one point and I really think that was the catalyst for putting the show over the top.

Here is the set list:

Bruce came out to tape of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" on an organ. He lead the crowd. So cool.

1. Thunder Road - oh.my.god. Roy on piano. Bruce on Harmonica. 1978 - here we come. This is my favorite Springsteen song. This version was incredible. The woman in front of us burst into tears.

2. Hungry Heart - great summer night. Great summer song.
3. Sherry Darling - more summer goodness
4. Summertime Blues - the Eddie Cochran cover. In reading reviews I learned that Bruce used to open shows in the summer of 1978 with this song.
5. Girls in Their Summer Clothes - this was an audible and there was some conversation on stage if everyone knew the parts. :)

We don't need everyone to remember, we just need most of the band to remember. Whose got it? Raise your hand. You got it, Garry, bass player's got it. Charlie's got it. We're good."
6. We Take Care of Our Own
7. Two Hearts
8. Wrecking Ball - the crowd booed the "Giants" reference. (And they should snicker snicker)
9. Death to My Hometown - I was secretly hoping for a big Boston Irish throw down on this one.
10. My City of Ruins - Bruce made reference to ghosts that are with us. Ghosts of Fenway Park. They lit of the Pesky Pole because Johnny Pesky has just passed.
11. Knock on Wood - (sign request) - Eddie Floyd cover. Only played ONE other time and that was when they were WITH Eddie Floyd. The same night Bruce jumped the gates at Graceland and tried to meet Elvis. :) My [crappy] video is at the top of the post.
12. Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street? - (sign request) - GREAT drum battle between Max and Everett Bradley on this one.
13. Thundercrack! - (sign request) - holy cow.
14. Frankie - (sign request) - another 1978 throwback.
15. Prove It All Night - (sign request) - and the sign specifically requested the 1978 opening. Which is just awesome. Bruce reminds you that he can play guitar. Nasty.
16. Darkness on the Edge of Town - more 1970s goodness.
17. Working on the Highway - ate half a hot dog and chugged a beer while strumming his guitar the whole time.
18. Shackled and Drawn - backup singer Cindy Mizelle shines here. Love this new band configuration.
19. Waitin' on a Sunny Day - at the exact same time it started to rain. And not a drizzle.
20. Backstreets - My second favorite song. AND! With a nice Dream Baby Dream interlude. Love DBD. AND! Another 1978 throwback. So intense. I am just COOKED at this point. I can't possibly take any more.
21. Badlands
22. Land of Hope and Dreams

ENCORE

23. Who'll Stop the Rain - he did this solo and acoustic. By the way, a song from 1970. A cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's off the Cosmo's Factory album.
24. Rocky Ground - love this song.
25. Born to Run
26. Detroit Medley - Bruce called an audible. Another 1978 throwback.
27. Dancing in the Dark
28. Quarter to Three - (sign request) - apparently a TOUR PREMIERE. AND another 1978 throwback. This was the closer to many 1978 shows. A cover made popular by Gary U.S. Bonds!
29. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out - A nice tribute to the Big Man. Bruce came way out into the crowd. Closest I've ever been to him. :)
30. American Land - Ken Casey of the Dropkick Murphys joined him. See - this is what I was hoping for with Death to My Hometown. But I get it.

Wow! When I look at this way, it really was a special show. A total throwback to 1978. So many covers! So happy that we were there.
