Seth, always a practitioner of tough love says that if you are TRULY a rockstar then you should not need a resume.
Great jobs, world class jobs, jobs people kill for... those jobs don't get filled by people emailing in resumes. Ever.
If you are a rockstar then you will have a rich and deep contact list that will provide stellar recommendations for you. You will have real, live, WOW! projects that you can point to. You will have a marketable reputation where people will come to you. If you don't have any of these things, then you are a slacker. And not a rockstar. And you should be prepared to keep sending your resume into the machine.
For the rest of us, those that are working on developing these things, Penelope comes to our aid with some very sound advice.
Your resume is a marketing document. It is also a tool to get you where you want to go. It should not be about where you have been. I cannot stress these two points enough.
Marketing document.
Focused on the future of YOUR choosing.
For those of you that have not suffered through my rants on achievements, PLEASE make sure your resume includes them. Boldly. No one cares about your typing speed or that you know how to use Excel.
A resume is not your life story. No one cares. If your life story were
so interesting, you’d have a book deal. The only things that should be
on your resume are achievements. Anyone can do their job, but only a
small percentage of the population can do their job well, wherever they
go.
Trunk goes further down this track by saying that your resume should ONLY include accomplishments. And then, not all of them. You need to have something to talk about.
I don't know if I am that brave. But I will give it a shot. A resume with a summary statement some keywords for the machine and accomplishments only. I'm sweating just thinking about it.
